Submagination.com Photoblog
Submagination.com is a photoblog run by Mike Brum (MikeBrum.com) to primarily showcase his macro and underwater photography.
Given the dive season in the northeast US and the limited amount one can shoot while underwater, the main focus will tend to be on macro. With this in mind, expect to see a diverse variety of subject matter and styles though.
About the photography
I'm a firm believer in framing the shot that you actually want to shoot. This is one reason why you won't see cropped photos on here. If I ever do need to crop something, I'll definitely note it in the photo's description. This means that all of the macro shots on here are shot at that size when I click the shutter.
I try to give as much thought as possible to composition and lighting in all of my shots. This can be difficult for quick-moving, skittish critters when shooting macro - but it's always on my mind. Since I don't crop my photos, making these decisions at the time the shot is taken is that much more important since poor composition or lighting can render a frame unusable.
I shoot Canon, but I"m not a "fanboy" by any means. It's just what I got started with and that's the type of gear that I'm financially invested with. I've seen people take amazing photos with every type of gear you can imagine. The creative process resides in the photographer - not their gear.
What Is Submagination?
Sub naturally means "under", "below" or "beneath". I naturally grabbed the root magination from "imagination". Literally, that would translate to "beneath imagination".
There are many ways to expand on this idea to explain what submagination means to me:
"Sub" clearly carries a strong connection to the underwater realm. While underwater photos aren't the only content here, I'm an avid scuba diver and it's something that's always on my mind.
The phrase "beneath imagination" invokes a feeling of a more instinctual reaction, beneath the conscious, that inspires free thought.
Humans tend to perceive the world in certain terms. We look at things around us with a certain sense of scale. Macro photography challenges that innate sense of size. I want people to look beneath the typical layers of perception and open themselves up to the world that exists around us but passes without notice.
